Magneto attacks the X-Men while they are training in the Danger Room, with a virus that is allowing simulations to become deadly. Though a bit corny, this story allows for a wide variety of levels as the Danger Room can simulate any situation. You get to play with your choice of four X-Men(Wolverine, Gambit, Nightcrawler and Cyclops), with four "helper" characters, through various levels of the X-Men universe.

What's it all about?
It's a fairly fast-paced adventure game. Using your choice of one of the four X-Men, you'll try to make your way through each of the Danger Room's simulations. Depending on who you pick, you'll have an a assortment of regular and "mutant" attacks at your disposal. Unlike X-Men 2 though, your mutant abilities will actually drain your "special" meter, and will eventually run out. To help you out, you're given your choice of four "helper" X-Men who you can call out to assist you with the various enemies. Like in Maximum Carnage/Seperation Anxiety, they come out, perform some devestating attack and then run off...

Graphics - Very good! Lush use of color, detailed characters with a nice, comic book style to them and enemies that look like someone actually put some effort into them(for once).
Sound - The music is very Chakan-ish, with some levels having a nice ambient factor to them. Sound effects are adequate, nothing special but they get the job done.
Control - Not too bad at all. You can get mostly all moves done each time you try, with the exception of the high jump(hitting the C button twice, REALLY fast. Works about half the time).
AI - Cheap as all fuck. Bosses are nearly impossible without the help of the the helper characters and the levels are full of cheap hits.
Replay value - Assuming you can take the extreme difficulty, I would say the replay value would be pretty high. It might also be fun, to have a buddy join you *IF*(and only if) you use the GG code to enable protection from most hits. If not, I doubt you'll make it past the first level together...
Tips for better gaming experiences:
I would highly recommend using the infinite X-Men switches code. The game is already amazingly hard, but the fact that you can only switch X-Men a couple of times per level(sometimes only once) brings it over the top. Do yourself a favor, use the infinite switches code to give yourself the advantage you need to make this game playable. BTW, if you die, you DO start the level entirely over. Think about it before you run in as Billy Badass, thinking you can do this on your own...

As for two player games, the game's constant indecision as to which character it's going to focus on will be your biggest enemy. The game has an odd way of focusing on one character. This is bad news for the character it's not focusing on as he/she will constantly be falling into holes or missing jumps, due to the fact that the other player has control of the screen's movement. Fight back with the "protection from most enemy hits" and "falling off screen" codes, make it a fun game, not a constant kick to the nuts. NOTE: When using the GG codes, you CANNOT go past Mojo's Crunch level in the normal way(being after you finish the level, you reset the game to move on), so you will have to reset the game, then enter the code to go to the last level, Magneto's Asteroid.

Game Genie:
Switch X-Men an infinite number of times: ALKA-CA86
Protection from most enemy hits: A3YA-AA32
Protection from falling off screen(no health lost): BDBA-CA34
Start on Asteroid M: BK6T-EAF2

My rating: 75(out of 100) - A good action title that loses points only for its extreme difficulty and constant cheap hits. As hard as it is to believe, when I first played this so very long ago, I didn't really care for it at all. Seeing it a GameStop, for $4.99, I decided to give it another shot. I am glad I did. This game is really quite good, once you get used to the extreme difficulty. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed X-Men 2: Clone Wars.
EGM gave it: 6, 7, 6, 8(out of 10)
Game Informer gave it: 9(out of 10)
GamePro gave it: 5.0(graphics), 4.0(sound), 5.0(control), 5.0(funfactor)(out of 5)

Cat's quip:
Not nearly as good as the second, in fact, it's kind of crappy. I didn't much care for it at all. Reow.
The fabulous four?
Nightcrawler getting some help from Storm, against one of the cheap ass bosses.
The ever wonderful claws of Wolverine...
Remember: ArchAngel is your friend, he can almost decimate enemies all by himself.
