Neo
Geo CD Load Times |
Please
note that all Neo CD loads are timed when the "Now Loading..."
screen appears, not just when the bar starts moving(as this can be one to
three seconds after the screen initially appears). I don't use a stopwatch
or anything fancy, just the internal clock on my iBook to time it...so loads
could be a second or two off... |
Double
Dragon: Excellent!! The loads on this game just zoom by, they really
don't seem like the 10 to 12 seconds most take. After choosing your character,
you are matched up against an opponent, the game performs the short load,
then one of you wins the match, you see the winning quote, then back to
the match up screen for the next opponent, and the process starts over again.
There is no load after using a continue if you use the same character, and
even if you decide to change it's only an 8 second load rather than the
normal length. All in all, this is how a CD based game should be... Please note that this set of load times was based on using Billy while playing through the entire game. Initial Load: 28 seconds First Fight: 12 seconds Vs Dulton: 11 seconds Vs Cheng Fu: 10 seconds Vs Marian: 10 seconds Vs Same Character: 2 seconds Vs Burnov: 12 seconds Vs Eddie: 12 seconds Vs Abobo: 14 seconds Vs Jimmy: 4 seconds Vs Rebecca: 10 seconds Vs Amon: 12 seconds Vs Duke: 11 seconds Vs Shuko: 15 seconds Character Ending: 7 seconds Choosing new character after continue: 8 seconds |
Fatal
Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory: Ugh, could be better...much
better. They don't cut you many breaks on this one, at all. Though the
initial load isn't the 45 seconds+ were usually accustomed to, the bordering-on-ruining-the-game
match loads more than make up for it. First, you have the "first fight"
load where both your character and the opponent are loaded, plus the
background...and that takes a hefty *47* seconds. After that, when you
fight the mandatory "Accident!!!"
scenario against Yamakazi, even though the next person you fight will
be on that same background, the game still loads for about the same amount
of time as if it were a completely new match. Though on most other games
these extensive loads would be enough to absolutely ruin them, SNK
is very lucky that FF3 really is just *that* good. Please note that this set of load times was based on using Terry while playing through the entire game. Initial Load: 34 seconds First Fight: 47 seconds Vs Blue Mary: 23 seconds Vs Franco Bash: 28 seconds Vs Joe Higashi: 27 seconds Vs Bob Wilson: 25 seconds Vs Yamakazi(accident!!!): 26 seconds Vs Mia: 25 seconds Vs Andy: 24 seconds Vs Hon Fu: 27 seconds Vs Sokaku: 28 seconds Vs Same Character: 10 seconds Vs Geese: 26 seconds Vs Yamakazi: 28 seconds Vs Jin Chonshy: 25 seconds Character Ending: 16 seconds Choosing new character after continue: 22 seconds |
Mutation
Nation: Not bad at all. This one follows the typical, early Neo
CD title syndrome of "Load once...and never again". Past that,
and it's not anything to get upset about it, the game will pause for a slight
second before and after mid-boss fights and at the beginning of new levels... Initial Load: 46 seconds Mid-Boss Load: 1 second New Level Load: 1 second |
Samurai
Shodown: Very reasonable. Though the initial load is pretty hefty(this
is standard with all Neo CD games), you only have to see it once. Basically,
you choose your character, the CPU randomly picks someone, the game loads,
you are shown the match up screen and then you fight(this is repeated until
you stop playing). Thankfully, there is no load time when you use a "Continue",
*if* you use the same character. The only downside to it all, and this is
extremely minor, is that there's a slight pause between when the actual
"Continue" screen shows up and when the music to accompany it
begins playing(thus, allowing you to hit "Start"). Please note that this set of load times was based on using Haormaru while playing through the entire game. Initial Load: 42 seconds First Fight: 22 seconds Vs Earthquake: 10 seconds Vs Wan-Fu: 13 seconds Vs Hanzo: 12 seconds Vs Nakoruru: 12 seconds Vs Kyoshiro: 13 seconds Vs Ukyo: 14 seconds Vs Charlotte: 14 seconds Vs Same Character: 5 seconds Vs Galford: 14 seconds Vs Jubei: 12 seconds Vs Gen-An: 13 seconds Vs Tam Tam: 12 seconds Vs Amakusa: 15 seconds Character Ending: 4 seconds Bonus Stages: 4 seconds Choosing new character after continue: 12 seconds |
Sengoku:
Excellent. After the hefty, initial load the rest of the game is
pretty much load-free. The only exception to this is that with some, not
all(oddly enough), of the bosses, the game will load for a second(or so)
before you fight them. Initial Load: 50 seconds Boss Load: 1 second |
This list will be updated as I review the games themselves, or just simply time the loads and such....so, in other words, there's more to come... |
