Finally, after a seriously long wait, here's Van Damme's first breakout film on DVD. Talk about old school Van Damme, this movie is it: Non-stop fighting with occasional bits of running around, and of course the "wonderful" acting.
You break my record...
Oh lord, does it get any better than the quotes coming out of this film? The various bits of acting are pretty crappy, but it's cool, we're here to watch the fights right? Watch them you will, as every single one of them are fucking good! Nothing beats that punch to the nuts....*nothing*. Of course, fan favorite Bolo Yeung(you know, the guy who's in *every* Van Damme film...people, wake up, he's only in TWO Van Damme movies)makes his debut with Van Damme as the hardcore "Chong Li". The end fight is filled with some amusing bits of slow down along with the signature Van Damme spin kicks. All in all, very good.

OK USA!
Well, partially ok I guess. Though the movie is great, old school Van Damme action the DVD's extra content is seriously lacking. With the highlight being the amusingly bad trailer, it doesn't bode well for the rest of the crap features. Sure the star bio's are nice, but as they are almost outdated the second the DVD is published it doesn't do much good. The one really nice thing I will say about it are the menu's high definition photographs. The various fighters accompany each of the various menus, and the main title menu even has the instrumental version of "Kumite" playing in the background.

Kumite, Kumite, Kumite!
The picture quality looks to have been cleaned up a bit and the sound is quite good, so maybe they put all their effort into that rather than the weak extra content, who knows. Overall, the DVD is definitely worth the price. A few more extras going into the history of Dux-Ryu would have been nice, as well as some insight into Dux's life. With the feuding that took place between him and Van Damme some years later though, I can see how it was "forgotten" in this release...

Movie: 80 - Hardcore fights scenes, signature Van Damme moves and some truly memorable quotes.
DVD: 55 - Nice pictures to go with the menus, but overall the extra content is just weak.
