Introduction ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You: What the hell? Hey Kitsune, isn't there an FAQ already out for this game? Me: Well... yes. You must be thinking of Mark O'Neill's Double Dragon FAQ version 2.1, released on August 2nd, 1995. I read it when I was in highschool, and it helped me to become the master of Billy and Jimmy Lee, and Rebecca! But it was never updated after that version was released. Some time later, I found a code that enabled the players to use the bosses, Koga Shuko and Duke! But, I tried and tried and tried it out, and it never worked (I always ran out of time on the counter). Fast forward to October, 2000. I found out that I can play the game in an emulator on my computer! So I got it and started playing it. After trying and retrying the boss code, I got fed up with the game... so I set it to 'Home' mode, just for fun. I thought 'one last time...' and I entered the code. IT WORKED! So I started messing around with the characters, and I started to write this FAQ to help all owners of the home version! Now, all of the character biographies, move names and descriptions were written originally by Mark O'Neill. I have updated only the information for Duke and Koga Shuko's moves - the rest of the character info is complete, and I am not going to update it. I am, however, adding my own descriptions of the character's moves. If you have questions on how to play the game, consult his FAQ for complete instructions. Please do not bother me with questions on the gameplay, thank you. Finally, as of July 2, 2001, I consider this FAQ to be complete. Unless something major comes up, I won't be updating it anymore. I see no point in doing so. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Choosing the Bosses ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Position the cursor on Billy Lee for three seconds. Move the cursor up towards Marian, and keep it there for three seconds. Move the cursor towards ChengFu, and leave it for three seconds. Finally, move the cursor towards Jimmy Lee, and keep it there for 3 seconds. You should hear Marian scream "Bingo!" - Duke and Shuko's portraits are now at the top of the character select screen! Just in case you didn't understand, here is a map on how to do this: Marian --2 0 Dulton | ^ | | Eddie | 0 0 Rebecca | ^ | | Billy | 1 4 Jimmy | ^ | | Burnov | 0 0 Amon | ^ | | Abobo | 0 3 ChengFu | ^ - - - | This code works on the Neo-Geo home version and the Playstation version. It will not work on the Arcade version. I am unaware if the code works on the Neo-Geo CD version. If you can verify it for me, please email me! ---= SD Character Portraits =------------------------------------------ If you beat the game using the bosses, the small character portraits change! They turn into Super-Deformed versions of themselves, and they look funny as hell! This apparently dissapears after the machine is reset, but I think it gets saved on the Memory Card. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. Bosses ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Duke ---= Character data =-------------------------------------------------- Birthplace - San Francisco POW: 4 Height - 6' 4" SPD: 5 Weight - 189 lbs DEF: 4 Fighting Style - Moukohisouken Interests - Origami ---= Holds/Throws =---------------------------------------------------- - B or C - You grab the enemy and hit him with a straight punch. - D - you do the same, but Duke screams differently and the attack is slightly stronger. ---= Air Throws =------------------------------------------------------ * none * ---= Special Moves =--------------------------------------------------- ~~~~~~Kosouranshoubu [Tiger Claw Fierce Palm Dance] Hold | , O + button O | Duke jumps at the enemy, lands on top of him, and starts punching him rapidly, a total of 8 times. It does not count as an 8 hit combo for some reason. ~~~~~~Mouko Resshouda [Fierce Tiger Intense Palm Strike] | \ -O + button O O It is a charge attack which acts like Billy/Jimmy's hadouken motion attack (So Syu Ga); except this one hits the enemy and sets him ablaze. ~~~~~~Shosoukyaku [Soaring Claw Kick] -O | \ + button O O A Shoryuken type attack. It is invincible; also, if you miss, you can still hit the enemy on the way down! ~~~~~~Hisoukyaku [Flying Claw Kick] Jump, then press O- / | + button O O Duke dives forward with his knees bent, hitting the enemy. ~~~~~~Chougekihashou [Leaping Palm Break] Hold O- for a moment, then press -O + button Duke dissapears, and teleports next to the enemy, hitting him by surprise with a punch. The computer usually attacks you from behind. Duke is vulnerable for a moment after he appears, just before he throws the punch. If you press the A or B button, you'll appear in front of the enemy; if you use the C or D button, you'll attack from behind. ---= Charge Moves =---------------------------------------------------- ~~~~~~Mouko Resshou Gekien Ha [Fierce Tiger Intense Palm Hellfire Break] | \ -O + 2 buttons O O It's just like Billy's Super Flaming Dragon Fist, except it is much easier to combo, and it hits 5 times. Pretty strong, too. ~~~~~~Houou Tenshoukyaku [Phoenix Sky Flying Kick] -O | \ + 2 buttons O O Duke jumps forward, lifting his opponent and hitting him multiple times. It hits up to 8 times, and causes _very_ heavy damage. ~~~~~~Houou Chizankyaku [Phoenix Earth Shattering Kick] Jump, then press O- / | + 2 buttons O O Duke dives forward with his knees bent, hitting you many times. If he catches you while in the air, it causes more damage. ---= Combos =---------------------------------------------------------- Duke can combo very easily, as you may have noticed whenever you've fought him ^^ All of his attacks can be comboed into very easily, with the notable exception of his wheel kicks (D button, while jumping, crouching and standing). Jump in with C, trying to land behind the opponent, then press D, afterwards finish with a Flaming Tiger Fist (5 hits) or a Super Flaming Tiger Fist (9 hits) ---= Playing Against Him =--------------------------------------------- The computer is sneaky. And it uses all the cheap moves that it can throw at you. In fact, I'd say that Duke would have been a better boss than Shuko, but that's just me. Anyway, if you try to jump in, he'll hit you with a Flash Knee Kick. If you try to attack his feet. he'll jump in and combo you. So what can you do? Well, wait. That's right, wait. As every other character in the game, he has a pattern. Keep walking backwards. If he jumps backwards, he'll immediately perform his Air Punches attack. Take this chance to hit him with a super move or a ShoRyuKen-type attack. Also, after he performs the Super Flaming Tiger Punch, he is open for a split second. And finally, his teleport attack leaves him open for a split second as well. Be sure to time your attacks right, and Duke'll be a piece of cake to beat! ---= Notes =----------------------------------------------------------- Many of the attacks that Duke uses are regular punches and kicks. Mark O'Neill said that they were probably special attacks; I have confirmed that this is untrue. The "Combo Punches" are performed by pressing C at a distance from the enemy. The "Flash Wheel Kick" is performed by pressing the D button. If you're standing, Duke jumps forward; if you're kneeling, he jumps backward. If you're jumping, he performs it, no matter in what direction you're moving. His Close C and D button attacks perform an automatic combo - C hits twice, once in the midsection and once in the lower part; D hits down, up, and finally the middle part of the enemy. The D button attack is especially useful - it can be comboed into a Super Flaming Tiger Fist, or a Super Eagle Flash Knee Kick! Koga Shuko ---= Character data =-------------------------------------------------- Birthplace - Los Angeles POW: 4 Height - 6' 1" SPD: 4 Weight - 189 lbs DEF: 4 Fighting Style - Kobujutsu and Ninpoh Interests - Chess, Shougi (Japanese Chess) ---= Holds/Throws =---------------------------------------------------- - B or C - You grab the enemy and hit him with a straight punch. - D - You grab the enemy and throw him straight up into the air. You can hit the enemy while they're falling down. The CPU usually hits you with a Fireball, but you can also use the Air Teleport Foot Stomp with the A button. ---= Air Throws =------------------------------------------------------ *none* ---= Special Moves =--------------------------------------------------- ~~~~~~Byakko [White Tiger] | , O + button O | Shuko dissapears and appears above you, stomping your head. If you are on the ground, he will jump down, grab you by the back, and set you on fire. If you are jumping, he will step on your head repeatedly. The computer seems to be able to do either of these even if you are on the ground. ~~~~~~Shujaku / Suzaku [Red Sparrow] | \ -O + button O O Shuko lights up his hand and throws a fireball at you. It follows an arc above the ground. When it hits you, it knocks you down. If you use it next to your enemy, his hand stuns them and he finishes with the fireball. ~~~~~~Houou [Phoenix] Jump, | / O- + button O O Shuko throws a fireball diagonally downwards. ~~~~~~Genbu [Mysterious Man] -O \ | + button O O Shuko kneels and throws a quick fireball close to the ground. ~~~~~~Souryuu [Blue Dragon] -O | \ + button O O This attack is similar to Amon's Super Ninja Bomb. If you use the A or B button, Shuko throws one Lighting Bolt. Use the C or D button, and he throws two. The attack covers the entire area in front and above him, all the way up to the ceiling! ~~~~~~Kasumi [Mist] O- -O + button This is not an attack, but an escape method. It can evade any type of attack! The only downside is that the computer is able to grab you while you're performing it. ---= Charge Moves =---------------------------------------------------- ~~~~~~Kirin [Shadow Attack] -O | \ +2 buttons O O Shuko turns into his shadow, and tries to grab you. If he succeeds, he starts hitting you many times and finishes you with a Lightning Column. This attack can hit an opponent that is on the ground, even if he's not dizzy! ~~~~~~Gekirin [Razor Attack] -O \ | + 2 buttons O O Shuko kneels and throws a razor-like special move that even when blocked causes heavy damage. It can destroy and stop ANY other projectile attack - BUT, it can be destroyed by certain special moves, like Billy Lee's Super Flaming Dragon Fist. Be aware that the computer is very cheap, and will try to counter this if it has enough Charge energy and has a stronger attack. ---= Combos =---------------------------------------------------------- Shuko is a very weak character when it comes to combos. His special attacks cannot be chained into a combo because they are very slow, however his super moves can be chained, albeit a bit slowly. A close, standing D attack can be chained into the Razor Attack or the Shadow Attack. The Razor Attack will always connect (if not, the enemy will recieve heavy damage). However, the computer will almost always block the Shadow Attack... but this isn't true for human players *grin* . ---= Playing Against Him =--------------------------------------------- The first round is a piece of cake. If you lose to him in the first round, leave the arcade game immediately and devote yourself to something else =P Seriously, he'll block a lot, but he'll barely attack, and doesn't even use one special move. But when Round 2 starts... get ready to suffer. His Charge gauge will build up quickly. His fireball attacks will keep you at a distance, while his Lightning attacks won't let you get near him. So what do you do? Double-tap the joystick to perform a small jump, press a button (usually C) and keep doing it. Eventually, Shuko'll let his guard down, and you can take that chance to perform a combo. Just be careful that he doesn't perform a super on you! ---= Notes =----------------------------------------------------------- When playing against him, he doesn't use any special moves until you have beaten him one round. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4.
